The 50 Most Racist Movies (You didn't think were racist)

Here's an interesting article in Complex Magazine about the 50 Most Racist Movies http://best.complex.com/lists/The-50-Most-Racist-Movies that you didn't think were racist. Although I would have to disagree with many of the selections, there are some here that I have been crying foul for some time now. Take particular note of the following:

#32: "Dragonball Evolution": an example of the common Hollywood practice of turning Asian characters white.
#30: "Twenty-one": another example of how Asian characters are turned white.
#26: "The Last Samurai": I actually really like this movie because the action and plot are so good ... but it's one of dozens (maybe hundreds) of movies where white guy saves the day among non-whites. While this sort of premise is common, this movie takes it to the next level by having a white guy be the last samurai and the only person who could save Japan ... a country that invented the samurai.
#16: "The Gods Must Be Crazy": a humorous and lighthearted short film, but it basically insults the intelligence of black people.
#5: "Sixteen Candles:" anyone who loves 80's movies will remember the crazy exchange student, Long Duk Dong. I have been told by many Asians who came of age in the 80's that Long Duk Dong became the bane of their existence.
#1: "Breakfast at Tiffany's": I'm too young to have ever seen this movie but you gotta see the scene of the crazy Japanese guy.

White Supremacy Part II

The other day was the day I met the alleged white supremacist (I stress the word "alleged"). I was a little nervous. Not that I thought the defendant would have any violent or extreme reaction, but I had never met a real-life white supremacist before!

I saw a rather gruff looking character right outside the courtroom, and for some reason I had the feeling that this was the guy. Physically, he was not imposing. He only stood about 5 foot 8. He had an average build. Middle-aged. Gray, thinning hair. He kind of looked like a worn out guy who had worked on a farm for most of his life. I approached him and asked, "John?" He looked at me with a raised eyebrow and asked, "Are you a Chinaman?" Just kidding; he didn't say that. He just responded, "yes." He had no negative reaction to seeing my very Asian face. We had a firm handshake. I introduced myself. His father came too and the first thing I thought was, "Oh, here is the head honcho of the Klan."

We went into a conference room and talked about the case. It was clear that they had major beef with the police. What a surprise! I mean, we're talking about Officer Hoppie ... I listened to them carefully, and we combed through the police report to look for discrepancies. He pointed out numerous things that he thought were complete lies by the police. The interesting thing was that he never denied the white supremacist allegation by his co-defendant. As we talked, the father kept interjecting with things like, "Yeah, what is wrong with the police these days?" He also said things like, "Now, this is a good attorney. This guy really listens. A lot of attorneys don't care." I appreciated the compliment.

Overall, I found them to be pretty normal people, and in fact, I thought the guy was innocent (although I think that of most of my clients).

I took my newfound knowledge of the case and let the prosecutor know about the flaws. He agreed the case was weak, so he reduced the charge from a misdemeanor to an infraction (which is pretty much equivalent to a traffic citation). Unfortunately, because infractions are so low on the totem pole of crime, the defendant no longer had the right to an attorney; the judge took me off the case. A trial date was set.

So that's it. Kind of anticlimactic, huh? Well, I guess that's a good thing. He didn't call me a chink and I didn't call him a honkie. I followed the advice of what some readers suggested, and I made no mention of race and just treated him like I would anyone else. I think it worked out. They expressed a lot of appreciation for my help. And I was actually sad that I couldn't continue to work with them.

What I learned from this is to never prejudge a white supremacist. They're people, too!

White Supremacy Part I

I've got an interesting dilemma. I was recently appointed to a case where I would have to defend a guy who, according to the police report, has "ties to white supremacy." At first glance, I was ok with this. I've always told myself that for the sake of justice and upholding the Constitution, I could defend pretty much anybody (except for maybe a child rapist who I know is lying through his teeth). However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized the potential conflict. I haven't met the guy yet, but when we meet next week at a court hearing, I wonder if he would even want me to be his attorney. Would I be the subject of his anger and hatred (assuming that he is angry and drinks haterade)? Would I eventually hate the guy myself if I find out that the allegations are true? Should I fear for my own life?

Oh, and here is an interesting twist for all you drama queens. The police officer who arrested my client was Officer Hoppie. He ain't going to be too hoppie when he sees me (see last post).

Racial Profiling? You decide

This is the police dashcam video of me getting pulled over by the Alpine/Highland Police a few months ago. The officer's name is Hoppie. Don't expect any Rodney King action to go down, but I believe there is a strong case for a violation of my civil rights. Especially pay attention to when he is back in his car checking my driver's license.

Background: My two friends (white guys) and I were driving to go to a restaurant for a midnight snack. I was perfectly driving the speed limit. It was at night and my back window was tinted, so I didn't realize that there was a cop following me for over a minute. We are all pretty clean-cut looking guys and I didn't have a single thing to drink or puff on that night. I was not tired or on any medication. I was perfectly sober. Any normal civilian would have seen that. The town we were driving through is Highland. It is a predominantly white area with a median household income of over $100,000.

While watching the video, I want you to keep in mind all the things that cops look out for when suspecting a potential DUI/DWI. They include but are not limited to the following: driving pattern (a cop will usually look for 2-3 missteps in driving before suspecting a DUI, or maybe one really bad traffic offense), how quickly and smoothly car pulls over, odor of alcohol or weed, fumbling of wallet, bloodshot eyes, watery eyes, dilated pupils, slurred speech, fumbling of wallet or car registration, attitude, nervousness, how he answers the cop's questions, etc. There usually has to be a combination of two or three of the above in order to have reasonable suspicion. Only when there is reasonable suspicion can a police officer have the right to proceed with further investigation like conducting field sobriety tests (walk the line, one-legged stand, etc.).

Also, keep in mind the following: I start to get pretty nervous with this cop breathing down my neck, I comply with everything because I don't want him to give me a ticket, and I also comply with everything because I know I am perfectly clean.

The most annoying kid I have ever met

About a year ago, I met this kid named Bob (pseudo-name) at my local church. This is when I had just moved to a small, racially homogeneous town. Bob was white. He was in his early twenties. Our introductory conversation, where we shook hands and exchanged names, would prove to be our first and last normal interaction.

On our second interaction, we, along with another kid, somehow get into a conversation about whether Asians could sport cornrows in their hair (Don’t ask me how we get on this topic). I mention that I’ve seen several Asians with cornrows before and that some of them looked ok. Bob responds, “Well, Asians just look weird anyway.” It was one of those statements that are so absurd that you automatically sense sarcasm… or so I thought. He then gave me a sideways glance, looking at me from the corners of his eyes, and flashing a really dumb grin (hereafter, I will call this “the dumb look”). The other kid and I exchange looks that say, “Huh? What did he just say?” Without words, it is understood that we do not want to turn an awkward statement into an awkward moment, so we continue with the conversation.

Interaction number three. I went out on a date with this one girl at church. This girl was good friends with Bob. At church, I am sitting with this girl when Bob approaches us. After some brief chit chat, Bob nudges the girl with his elbow and says, “So why are you going out with this Asian guy?” Again, it seems to be one of those comments where humor is found in the absurdity. And again, he gives me “the dumb look.” So, we all have a good, awkward chuckle.

The problem with the above two interactions is what often occurs with apparently facetious statements about race. Because race has become a sensitive topic in America, it is difficult to state one’s negative opinions of another race. To get around this, racial commentary is delivered with a clever punch line (not that either of the above comments had any real punch line, but they were obviously meant to be humorous). Humor and wit serve as a mask for people’s hatred or prejudices. And incidentally it is hard to combat it because voicing objection to such speech is viewed as ultra-sensitive.

But let’s keep things in perspective. If a racial comment is made in jest, I will treat it as any other comment made in the same manner—I will laugh. But--and this is a big but--the joke has to be relevant, good-natured, and diplomatically delivered. And so logically, just like any other joke, the context and content must be appropriate; if I don’t know you well enough or if you just made fun of my momma, then maybe I will get a little sensitive.

Continuing with my interactions with Bob, numbers four to about a dozen. The weeks go by and I see Bob at church or at some church function pretty much once or twice a week. However, we never have any real conversations. Without exception, when the kid sees me in the hallway or when I enter the room, he shouts out, “Hey, it’s the Asian kid!” or “Hey, the Asian guy is here!” And every time he says this, he has “the dumb look,” and it’s always in front of several other people. Because of the joking manner in which he says this, and the fact that we always have an audience, not to mention the fact that what he is saying is not in any way false (Well, whaddya know, I am the Asian guy!), it is difficult to ever call him out and risk looking like the uptight minority kid. I don’t want to make a scene, especially for something that is meant to be a joke, at least in Bob’s mind. I should also probably mention that most people who hear his comments have no positive or negative reaction. Most of them are expressionless like they don’t know what hit them. Some of them grin or laugh, and some who are possibly a little more socially aware give Bob a raised eyebrow. There are a couple of times where I respond with something like, “Hey, look it’s another white guy.” That’s actually when the onlookers would laugh the most. But in no way do I ever smile back or humor the kid. I think most onlookers would agree that I looked a little bothered.

Interspersed between the constant “Hey, it’s the Asian guy” comments, are a couple of other more notable comments. However, each instance is nowhere egregious enough for me to call him out. There is at least one time he says, “Oh, who invited the Asian guy?” But again, it was in conjunction with “the dumb look.” And there is another time where he mentions something about Asians and ping pong; a pretty harmless comment, but combined with everything else, I am becoming very irritated. I start to see that he doesn’t think of me as a normal human being. He only sees me as some kind of talking point, like I am a walking target for racial commentary.

There is a swirl of emotions that run through me when I am constantly pointed out as the Asian guy. I mean, it is already quite apparent that I look physically different from everyone else around me; is there really any reason to point out the obvious? Is there really any reason to make me feel any more different than I already do? “Hey everyone. Look at me! My name is Jang, and I’m from a different planet!”

After about six months of this, I tell my brother about Bob. I tell him that the next stupid thing Bob says, I’m going to punch the dude in the stomach. I am pretty set on doing this. For the life of me, I cannot think of a way to handle this in a civil manner. It is one of those things where I thought commonsense would not get through this kid’s thick skull. I thought that all my puzzled looks and snappy responses back to him would have finally made him realize that what he was saying was rude and racist. I am fully convinced that a beat-down is the only way to get this kid to understand. But my brother talks some sense into me. He tells me that as soon as word got out of what I had done, the neighborhood would label me as the minority thug. Not to mention that this kid would probably call the police on me—“angry Asian man gone berserk!”

So another month goes by and nothing changes. Then the final interaction... or should I say confrontation?

I go to a pool party at someone’s house. When I arrive, there are probably 15 or so people playing volleyball in the pool. Bob is there, too. As soon as I enter the water, Bob says the usual, “Oh, when did the Asian guy get here?” I let it slide once again. We play volleyball for about 10 minutes. And then Bob passes me the ball. As he does this, he calls out, “Hey, little Asian man!”

Ooooh, man… no he didn’t! That was IT! I've had enough of this kid. This comment put me over the top. And while I know the first comment six months ago was already over the top, this one really does it for me because he didn’t have a joking tone. And more than anything else, now he is getting dangerously close to calling me a racial epithet. This Bob character is not any bigger or stronger than I, by even a little bit. If anything, I am probably taller than he is. So for him to call me “little” is not for endearing purposes, and is more likely based on the stereotype that Asians are smaller. I am so furious at this point. But I manage to calmly take myself out of the game. I go over to the hot tub, and mull over what has just happened and what is about to happen. I sit in the hot tub almost incapacitated with anger. To the two other people in the hot tub, I say, as I point over to Bob, “You see that kid over there? Well, the next stupid thing that kid says, I’m gon’ smack him in the face.” Both of them are a little confused and ask what was up. I briefly explain the situation but they have no idea what I am talking about. Unfortunately, now that I have witnesses I feel forced to make good on my word.

So, eventually, just as expected, Bob enters the hot tub. A bunch of others also follow him. So there are probably up to ten people in there. I sit there just hoping, and knowing, that this kid is going to say something stupid. And within a few minutes, he does. He says, “Hey, Jang. What’s it like being Asian? You must like Asian food. Do you like it more than American food?” I methodically get up from my seat, stand in the middle of the hot tub, and announce for all to hear, “Ok, I want everybody to witness this!”

At this point, according to witnesses who told me afterward, my New Yawk accent is in full effect. I slowly walk over to Bob. I put my face to probably a foot away from his face. I point my finger at his eyes, and I yell, “WATCH YO’ MOUTH!” He responds in disbelief, “Are you serious?” I answer, “Yeah, I’m serious!” I continue in full volume, “Ever since I met you, all you been talking about is me being Asian. Talk about something else!” I turn around and face the crowd, and ask, “Everyone’s heard it, right? Everyone’s heard him say this stuff, right?” I couldn’t get an Amen if I were a preacher. In fact, everyone has their heads down, trying to avoid eye contact. Bob responds with, “Um, I was just joking. I talk like that to all my black friends and Mexican friends.” A couple of his friends support him on this by saying that they joke the same way, and acknowledge that Bob is just that kind of guy—“That’s the way he is, dude.” I yell back in Bob’s face, “Yo, but I ain’t yo’ friend!” He says, “Sorry, dude.” Now, while all of this is going on, Bob never removes the stupid grin off his face. So I say, “Well, if you’re sorry, then wipe that smile off your face!” I continue, “So, the next stupid thing you say, I’m gon’ smack you! I’m gon’ smack you in the face.” And I’m not sure what Bob was thinking but he responds, “Well, why don’t you smack me right now?”

I had a split second decision to make. Do I get the satisfaction of hitting this dude, in front of all these people who have no idea why I’m mad, and then get labeled the super sensitive Asian guy and the thug of the town? Or do I stay calm and salvage any respect that I have left with these kids? The repercussions of hitting someone and getting into a brawl in the middle of a hot tub, at none other than a church activity, just does not seem worth it to me. So I chicken out. I return to my seat, and I say exasperatingly, “Whatever, man” as I roll my eyes and shrug my shoulders.

For a few seconds everyone just sits there. Someone in the group makes a poor but noble attempt at breaking the awkward silence by asking me, “Hey, so where are you from?” Although it feels like one of those cheesy moments in a Mormon Church commercial that encourage you to embrace those who are different, I don’t want to make things more awkward by not answering, so I say, “New York.” Then the inevitable follow-up question is, “Where in NY?” I reluctantly say, “The Bronx.” I know what everyone was thinking at this point—“Oh, that’s why this guy is so violent….”

So after a little more awkward chit chat, Bob leaves the hot tub. He appears to be feeling very dumb and out of place. He just stands outside of the hot tub for like 20 minutes, looking at his phone, and pretending to be preoccupied with a thought. Eventually, he says, “Well, bye everyone.” Then he leaves.

Even while I was in the middle of my tirade I was feeling regret for handling the situation like I had. Now, I am feeling embarrassment.

The next morning I receive a call from an unknown phone. I don’t answer. It calls back another two times. I assume it is Bob. I still don’t answer. A few hours later I receive a text message. It is a 4 page text from Bob. I don’t remember the content very well, but it says something like, “I’m sorry. I didn’t know that it bothered you. I thought I was able to joke like that because we were friends and because you’re unique. And blah blah blah.” It is sincere. Naïve, but sincere. And I know that he is making a real effort to make amends, and I can’t take that away from him. So I reply with a text, stating that his apology is accepted and that one day I will sit down and explain to him why his actions were inappropriate.

Unfortunately, that day did not ever happen. Many months have gone by since the incident, and other than an acknowledging head nod whenever we happen to make eye contact, we don’t ever interact. I know I may have missed a great opportunity to educate someone, but honestly, I just wanted to let the whole thing go. And I almost feel like there was no need for any sensitivity training, because Bob ended up calming down in all respects. He was a pretty obnoxious guy overall, but after the incident, I have not heard a peep out of him. At least when I am in the room, he is completely reserved, and it almost seems like he has gone into a hermit shell. Is it because of me? I don’t know. But I can guarantee you he will think twice before making another so-called joke.

We all say really dumb things

In high school, I once followed my dad to work. We visited a store where he sold some of his merchandise. It looked as though my dad knew the storeowner, a Chinese man, fairly well. As I watched my dad and the storeowner converse, I thought it was interesting to find two immigrants from different countries using their second language of English as their mode of communication. I thought how there must be countless opportunities for things to get lost in translation.

After they had some small talk and had a good chuckle about something, my dad patted the storeowner on the shoulder and looked at me and said, “He is an honest Chinese man.” My eyes widened, and I quickly glanced at the owner to see if he actually understood the subtle yet apparent hint of prejudice. Fortunately, the storeowner did not flinch and he kept on smiling. Phew, Lost in translation!

I spoke to my dad about his “compliment” when we left the store. I explained to him the significance of his words. At first he didn’t understand. While my dad’s command of the English language may have been one reason for the Freudian slip, I believe that it was, indeed, a Freudian slip. He was unintentionally manifesting a prejudice toward the Chinese. There is the stereotype that the Chinese are shrewd businessmen, and apparently my dad thought so too.

So, why was my dad’s statement not a genuine compliment? The lingual significance is subtle enough to merit an explanation. In my dad’s mind, he was paying a genuine compliment to the storeowner: “This man is honest.” There is nothing wrong with saying that. But what my dad was also subliminally saying was that most of the storeowner’s countrymen were not that honest. A man’s ethnicity or race should not have any correlation to a man’s honesty, yet my dad thought it did. And because the storeowner happened to be honest and Chinese, my dad wanted to point out that fact, as if it were something remarkable to take note of.

To further illustrate my point, let’s take a few examples of where the stereotype may be more obvious. Let’s say an employer sees one of his employees, who is black, working late hours in the office, and tells him, “You are a hard working black man.” Hmmm, not so much a compliment, right? Here’s another one: a police officer sees a Latino and tells him, “You are a law-abiding Mexican.” Now is the prejudice becoming a little more clear?

Most of us would like to think that we wouldn’t say such dumb things. But here are some things that pretty much everyone is guilty of saying or agreeing to, at one point or another: “That white boy can dance”; “He plays basketball really well for an Asian”; “He’s white, but he can really jump”; “He’s a really tall Asian guy”; “He’s a really good white rapper.” These are pretty common things I hear (or even say) but because dancing, basketball, height, and rapping skills are rather innocuous topics, there is very little social backlash, despite the obvious bias.

It’s the more sensitive topics of intelligence, work-ethic, socio-economic status, or some apparent behavioral predisposition that people are more cautious about. To spot prejudices of this sort, you have to have a keen sense of social interaction, language, and universally believed cultural biases. While I have heard outright racist comments like, “He’s a really smart black guy,” people are usually good about staying away from such obvious prejudice. So as an alternative, a more common scenario might look like this: if there is a group of people talking about some person, and it is agreed that person is black, someone in the group may feel the need to go to great lengths to point out that the guy is also very well-spoken and has a college degree. In response, several people in the group may say, “Oh, really? Wow! That’s wonderful.” I’ve heard conversations like this a million times. Are they sincere compliments? Yes. But are they the kind of compliments you would give a white guy? It depends. Usually, the white guy needs to have done something a little more grand to warrant such commentary, like if he just won a national speech contest or graduated from medical school. In other instances, such commentary may occur for a white guy if it was known that the guy grew up in a trailer park and had a broken home, but yet made it to college. For a black guy, it is almost always assumed that the guy grew up in the hood and had a broken home, which is why we gasp when we hear of a black guy who made it.

I know I’m entering the danger zone of being overly sensitive by saying all of this because I know many of you are thinking, “Uh, does that mean I can never compliment someone who happens to be a minority?” No, that is not what I’m saying. Compliment all you want. Compliments are good things. But what I am saying is that while it may not be so apparent, we all have prejudices that are manifested in our speech on a pretty regular basis ; just be aware of them and understand the "why" and "how" of what you are saying. Because you may not be as lucky as my dad, and someone may think that what you are saying is really dumb.

Asians all look the same (the sequel!)

For this second installment of “All look same” I will focus on the more common and therefore more annoying idea that all Asian people look the same. As I briefly explained in part I, this one deals with the sameness on an individual level and how it may be difficult to tell apart this Asian guy from that Asian guy.

First I would like to say that if you have had little exposure to Asian people, it is understandable and quite normal to have trouble distinguishing between Asians. It is a well-documented fact that every race has a tough time distinguishing people of other races. The law has even recognized this, and so whenever you have an eye-witness in court who testifies against someone of a different race, you can discredit that testimony with an expert witness who informs the jury about the inherent difficulty for one race to identify people of other races. Misidentification has notoriously been a major problem for minorities caught up in the justice system (Yes, I know white people are misidentified, too).

While I acknowledge the inherent difficulty, it still bothers me when people confuse me as someone else. To be honest, I couldn’t care less if you can’t tell a Korean from a Chinese, but if you can’t tell me apart from my Asian friend who is standing right next to me, that is just a tad annoying.

In my freshman year at college, there was a Chinese kid from Michigan who lived on my floor in the dormitory. His name was Naman (pronounced Nay Min, like the character in the Old Testament). Honestly, you really couldn’t find two Asian guys who looked more different. He was 5’5". I’m 5’10". He was buff. I was very skinny. His hair was straight and spiky. Mine was a straight afro. His wardrobe was stuff from Abercrombie. Mine was stuff from a hip hop video. These were some of the more notable differences, not to mention the minor detail that our faces looked totally different. Even with all these apparent differences, however, there was this one kid on our floor who would constantly call me by my Asian counter-part’s name. And my Asian counter-part would get my name. I would politely correct him every time he got it wrong, but as the semester wore on and he continued to do this, he could sense that I was getting a little perturbed. I think on one of the very last times he mixed us up, I was walking down the long hallway of the dormitory when I saw the kid walking towards me from the opposite end. As we neared each other, I could see a look of worry on his face. When we got to about 10 feet of each other, he blurted out, "Naman!" like a contestant on a game show. But as soon as he said it, he knew it was wrong, so he quickly corrected himself almost in a remorseful tone and said, "Jang." He had a pained look on his face as he rolled his eyes, knowing that he had done it again. I was just glad the semester was almost over.

More recently, in my first year of law school, I went to the Career Services Office to get acquainted with some of the people there. I had actually been in the office before and had remembered the girl’s name behind the counter. I entered the room and called the girl by her name, slightly proud that I had even remembered it. In response, she called me “Alma.” I gave her an inquisitive look. And then she corrected herself and said, “Oh, Nate!” I raised my eyebrow even further. And then she corrected herself again and exclaimed, “Oh, Jang!” The funny thing was that she did not appear to be even remotely embarrassed that she had just named off every Asian guy in the first-year class. In fact, she looked pretty excited that she had gotten my name at all. At least, she didn’t name the one Asian female. Check out the class photos of the three Asians, in the order that they were named (My hair was shaved for all three years of law school).

Besides the fact that the blue backgrounds make us look like the Brady Bunch goes to the Orient, these are fair representations of our faces. While some legally blind people may argue that Nate and I look like carbon copies, if you see us in person it is even more apparent that we look nothing alike. Plus, I think the girl in the office wasn't thinking in terms of how similar we actually looked, but more in terms of race ("Oh, they're all Asian!"), considering the fact that she named Alma first, and I think most people would agree that Alma does not look like me.

And of course, there's the “Hey, you look like my friend, Johnny Zhang [or insert some other Asian surname].” Now, I am not opposed to looking like other people, but if you say this to me, be prepared to show tangible proof. I want you to introduce me to this guy or at least show me a headshot, so I can determine for myself if he is really my spitting-image. If he is, then fine. I'll be glad that someone else has also been blessed with dashing good looks; it’ll just be awkward if I run into this twin at a party. If not, then I'm going to smack you across the face and tell you to go back to where you came from (that's a joke, people). I realize this is a completely subjective thing because I’ve often noted, in the face of great opposition, that some person looks strikingly like another person. I mean, did anyone else think that Jim Carey looked kind of like his co-star, Cary Elwes, in the movie Liar, Liar? See for yourself (I don’t think the picture is from the movie, however). I just thought it was a funny casting choice to have them both in the same movie.

I mean, there's a reason why we have celebrity look-alike contests in America. And surprise, none of the contestants are Asian. Well, that's because there are no Asian celebrities (I'll save that for a future post).

But it was particularly disturbing when on one occasion, a person who I had just met for a few hours told me that I looked like one of her friends. I asked whether he was Asian. She answered, “Yes... and she acts just like you, too.”

Oh, come on! She?! Now I'm a girl?! And this girl even acts like me? Oh, double come on!

Actually, the funny thing is that I've gotten the "and he acts like you, too" probably about a dozen times. But since acting is a behavior and not a physical trait, you would think I would sometimes be compared to a non-Asian. But no. Oddly enough, I have never been compared, behavior-wise, to another white guy, which is strange since I'm pretty sure most white people mostly have white friends, thereby increasing the pool of potential white people I could be compared to. Some people who I'm pretty sure only know like two Asian people, will somehow manage to find that I act exactly like one of their Asian acquaintances back from high school. Imagine that! I act exactly the same way as one of those two Asian people they know. And I look like him! Well, by golly gee, it's a miracle!

Oh, and get this. There was even one time on a date last summer where the girl told me that my voice sounded just like a couple of her Hawaiian friends, and she therefore concluded that Asians all sounded alike.

Maybe I should have entitled this post, "Asians all look, act, smell, think, sound, and pretty much do everything the freakin' same." But I digress...

So, what is the conclusion? Um... well... nothing! I just wanted to gripe about how people mix me up with other Asians. I can't do anything to help this phenomenon, besides tell people to go make an Asian friend today or watch more Asian movies. It's not racism to misidentify people. The only crime is that you don't get out much. You probably don't remember what the sun looks like either. And that's a shame. So, if you think all Asians look the same, it really doesn't say that much about Asians, but it does say a lot about you.

Asians all look the same (part I)

The idea that Asians all look the same has two parts. Both parts stem from the same idea, but they are characteristically different in the sense that one is on a micro-level while the other is macro. They go like this: it is difficult to distinguish from one individual Asian from another, and it is hard to distinguish one Asian ethnicity from the other. For this first installment, I will focus on the latter, the idea that Asians from different countries could all look like they come from the same country, particularly in regards to the East Asian countries of China, Korea, and Japan.

I cannot remember the number of times that I’ve been asked, “Can you tell the difference between a Chinese person and a Japanese person, or a Korean and a Chinese?” For the first 27 3/4 years of my life, I had no qualms about answering this question. It seemed to be a valid curiosity, posed without any agenda, bias, or ill. I usually responded by saying that it was difficult for me to tell the difference between the various ethnic groups but that I could usually get it right like 6 or 7 times out of 10. I’m usually met with faces of astonishment and sometimes statements of disbelief like, “No way! Really? I can’t tell the difference at all!” And for a moment, I feel proud of my God-given gift of discernment.

So for all the people who have wanted to ask this question to a real-life Asian, I will answer this mystery once and for all: Yes, I can tell the difference between the Asian ethnicities. But let me qualify this by saying that I get it wrong 3-4 times out of 10. But before you go off and conclude that I really can’t tell the difference, ask yourself this question: can you always tell the difference between a Frenchman and a German or a Greek and an Italian? Would you say you get it wrong maybe as much as half the time? The question could also be asked for the various black and Hispanic ethnicities. Does that Mexican look like that Guatemalan? Does that Ghanaian look like that Ugandan? Sure, there are plenty of distinguishing characteristics you can look out for, but there are just as many exceptions that can throw you off.

Now, the question itself doesn't bother me. Because I agree, it can be fun to try to figure out who’s who. But the recent spate of such inquiries (three times in the last week), has led me to reevaluate the “all look same” idea and the motive behind it. One thing that gets me is why all the curiosity? I have been asked whether I can distinguish between my fellow Asians by nearly every one of my good friends and acquaintances. In fact, it seems as though the whole country is asking it. There is even a website dedicated to this conundrum (alllooksame.com). Try out the test online and you’ll be even more convinced that there is no physical difference between East Asians (keep in mind that if you have little exposure to Asians, you will test very poorly. And for those who do know Asians, you will also do poorly because the test is trying to throw you off).

My only answer to this unusual degree of curiosity is that it goes to the whole notion that Asians look the same, no matter what country they are from, and it’s just so darn funny to make light of it. While I recognize that most people who pose this question to me are not being malicious in the slightest degree, I just have to wonder why hardly anyone asks if that Brit looks like that Swede, or if that Spaniard looks like that Italian; the idea that you cannot distinguish Europeans is never the punchline to any joke. Hidden beneath the "all look same" question is actually a statement that wants to get out but is politically incorrect: “I think all Asians look the same.” My take on why people are so enchanted with this question is that people love to think of Asians as this monolithic group of people who all have slanty eyes and dark hair. Or another way to interpret it is that they are not individuals; they are all the same. Do you know how many times I’ve watched a movie with a group of people and the Asian character in the movie (with an insignificant role, no doubt) appeared on the screen and the person next to me said, “Hey, it’s your dad!”? It's almost a guaranteed response by at least one person watching the movie. They think it’s the most hilarious thing. In fact, this just happened on a date a couple months ago. She thought it was funny; I ignored her.

But it doesn’t stop at physical features. This idea even extends to the culture: Asians all eat noodles, use chopsticks, and have mean karate kicks. Europeans, on the other hand, are seen as individuals, with each country offering a unique culture and experience. The ironic thing is that a very convincing argument can be made that each Asian country is a lot more culturally distinct from one another than the European countries are from one another. And that's kind of a given, considering the close proximity of countries in Europe and their centuries of very intertwined history.

If you can't tell the difference between the various Asian countries, no one is blaming you. But just ask yourself if it's going to be annoying for the Asian guy who has to constantly be the butt of "all look same" jokes and who has to answer "all look same" questions three times a week.

So before you ask your next Asian friend whether he could guess if that Asian girl eating noodles is Korean, Chinese, or Japanese, just remember one thing—you have a whole continent of people who look just like you too… and they eat potatoes.

Korea: the land of a million grocery stores

My brother’s high school basketball coach once told him, “You’re a pretty good basketball player. Maybe you won’t grow up to own a grocery store.” Wow. What a compliment! Or was it advice?Talk about deflating your dreams of ever becoming a grocer.

A friend in law school once asked me if Korea was a land full of grocery stores and drycleaners (proof that attorneys can be pretty dumb). I had to explain to him that there were many other services and products available and that not all 45 million people were spraying vegetables and pressing suits. His follow-up question was why then are there so many Koreans in that line of work in America. First, I replied by saying, “Well, my parents owned a luggage store! So there!” No, I didn’t say that. But I did explain to him that many immigrants get into the line of work that other immigrants before them have established themselves in. For Koreans, it’s grocery stores and drycleaners… oh, and nail salons. For the Chinese, it’s also drycleaners but they also open a lot of restaurants. For Indians, it’s convenience markets and motels. The list goes on and on for every ethnicity. Because newcomers to America will look to their already established family and friends for help, they will often enter the same industry as them and pretty soon an entire ethnic group will dominate a trade.

What you may not know is that many of these immigrants are well educated (many have master’s degrees) and could get better jobs in their home country, but American money, freedom, and what they think is a better life for their children lure them to pursue the American dream. But when they get to the country, language and cultural barriers often prevent them from doing anything other than what their relatives do.

But the explanation goes even deeper for some specific industries. For example, historically, the Chinese have been running dry cleaners since the 1800’s. The main reason for that was because it was literally one of the only jobs that the Chinese were allowed to do at the time. Since Chinese men had little other skills and were viewed as effeminate, they were relegated to cleaning clothes. When large numbers of Koreans showed up in the 1960’s and 70’s, they looked around and saw that their fellow Asians were cleaning clothes, so then they eventually picked it up too.

So there you have it. That’s why certain ethnicities always seem to be doing the same kind of work. It’s not because they have some kind of knack for it, or even like doing it. Maybe my brother should go back to his high school and tell the coach that he took his advice… and became a doctor, instead.

The Spanish basketball team strikes back!

An astute reader made the following comment to my last post on the Spanish basketball team (see post below, Derogatory expressions: the chinky-eye):

"I don't agree with your reasoning here, Jang. You acknowledge that this gesture [the chinky-eye] would be less offensive in China, but then project your childhood experiences in the Bronx onto the Spanish basketball team. Spain is also a different country with different racial and cultural complexities. Granted, they are not ethnically homogenous, but it's still not fair for you to hold them to your experiences in the Bronx. The Spanish national teams have long had a strong connection with China and are sponsored by the Li-Ning shoe company, which is the Nike of China. Regardless of their motives when they took the picture in question, it's not rational for you to hold them to your personal childhood experiences."

This was my response:

"Your comment is so good that I wanted to dedicate a separate comment [post] for you. Thanks for bringing up the apparent flaw in my reasoning. And I was actually hoping that someone would catch it. But let me tell you why you are wrong and why I am right... haha.

First, as you pointed out, Spain is not ethnically homogeneous. That is key. I'm going to make a wild stab at this but you'd be hard pressed to find a Spaniard who has never seen an Asian person. Spain has many immigrants from all over the world, in fact. Not being ethically homogeneous means you hear, read, and see social interactions with other kinds of people. That fact alone should make you aware that some people are different and they generally don't like it when you make fun of that difference.

Also, this is not the first trouble Spain has gotten into when it comes to race and sports. You may recall how it was reported that the Spanish soccer players and fans were making monkey gestures and sounds at a black player on another team during a game. Will you not hold them accountable for this just because they don't understand what making fun of a black person is? Will you say that Spain's cultural experience is so different that they didn't understand that their gestures and sounds constituted mockery? If yes, then I cannot win this argument.

Also, if there's any country that should understand racism, it should be Spain, given their history of colonizing nearly all of Latin America, parts of Africa, the Philippines, etc. They KNOW racism.

As for China, you could live there your whole life and never see a non-Chinese person. In fact, that's probably the case for 90% of Chinese. That means they have never come across a person who calls them a chink or gives them the chinky-eye. And as you can see from Saerom's comment above, who grew up in homogeneous Korea, she initially didn't think the chinky-eye was a big deal. Why? because noone has ever done it to her! Asians who live in Asia have absolutely no concept of why having a smaller or "slanted" eye is even considered a bad thing. There's no problem seeing out of the eye and everyone around them has that kind of eye so why would it ever cross their mind that it's a negative thing to have an eye like that? Because obviously, it's NOT a negative thing, but some people, like the Spanish b-ball team would like to make light of it.

And as a last point, you don't have to come from the same background as me to understand when you are mocking someone. Mockery and ridicule is a universal language. Now that doesn't mean everyone equally understands the social significance of a certain form of ridicule, but there is certainly more understanding from the person who is doing the mocking as opposed to the one receiving it.

But then again, if your momma didn't teach you that teasing other kids is not right, then that is a whole other problem..."

Derogatory expressions: the chinky-eye

The first day at a new school is a frightening experience. We moved to a new neighborhood in the middle of my first year in elementary school. This particular section of the Bronx had a lot more white people. When my dad introduced me to the new teacher, it was in front of the whole class. My new teacher, Ms. Tanlish, smiled at me and instructed the class to say hello to the new student. In unison, as elementary school students do, they greeted me with a half-sung “Hello, Jang.” I peered around the class looking for a friendly face. In the back of the class was this one kid who had a scowl on his face. My focus stayed on him. And then he made the face; the world famous Chinese chinky-eyed face.

For the people who don’t know what this is, I’ll explain the chinky-eye. It’s when you take your fingers and pull the outer corners of your eyes to make your eyes appear slanted and smaller, like Asian eyes. I have been the recipient of this middle-finger-gone-racial more times than I can count. That’s why whenever I see or hear of it now, my blood boils.

Never would I ever expect a childhood method of ridicule to become the center of international controversy, but it happened during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Briefly, this is what went down: the Spanish basketball team posed for a full-page newspaper ad that had all the players doing the chinky-eye. Of course, because of the internet, the picture was quickly disseminated, and the world got a quick introduction to the chinky-eye. And most of the world was pretty upset. The Spanish team, and actually most Spaniards, were taken aback and were not prepared for such criticism. Their defense was that they did not intend to offend anyone but wanted to “commemorate” or show “affection” the fact that the Olympics were being held in China and that the chinky-eye was the symbol for Chinese people in Spain (or some crap like that). The Chinese were actually pretty quick to forgive, issuing an official statement of “it’s all good.” But it was the international community, namely America, that protested the lack of forethought and sensitivity that went into such a public and, presumably, premeditated mockery. Spain was baffled by America’s reaction, especially since the intended target, China, seemed to be fine with it.

Now, I was very glad that there was any reaction at all. Because when something like this happens to Asians, no one could care less. In fact, I would have been satisfied if just one big publication like the NY Times reported on it. But for some reason, the media rode the story out for days. I was impressed.

So, here is my take on it. I heard many arguments that went like this, “But look, even the Chinese were alright with it.” Ok, do you remember who we’re dealing with here? It’s China. This is a country that is almost completely ethnically homogenous. Chinese are the overwhelming majority in China, so chances are, they’ve never been subjected to such racial gestures, let alone racial hate, and therefore don’t quite feel the full sting of the slap in the face. So yeah, why not forgive Spain for something that just seems childlike and petty?

Ok, and second of all, do you remember who we’re dealing with here? It’s China. This is a country that will stop at nothing to look good in front of the world. I think we saw evidence of that with the lip-syncing girl, the underage gymnasts, and the millions of dollars poured into the opening ceremonies. So, it’s no surprise that the Chinese government would brush this one off, not wanting to fuel unnecessary controversy and draw attention away from what we really came to see; this was China’s once in a lifetime chance to showcase its awesomeness.

But still, I heard other arguments that went like this, “What’s the big deal. They weren’t intending to offend anyone. It was just a joke.” Now, how can I put this plainly… ok, that is just plain stupid. Yes, they were intending to be offensive. What they didn’t intend for to happen was that newspaper ad to ever leave the country of Spain. C’mon, how do you expect me to believe that a group of twenty-something year old men didn’t understand the offensive nature of a racial gesture when I’ve been subjected to that same gesture from four-year olds who knew perfectly well that they were making fun of me? I have never had a kid give me the chinky eye because he wanted to be “affectionate” towards me. If you really want to claim that you are dumber than a four-year old then be my guest.

I was at a party a few weeks back. It was a typical Utah house party: rock band, dancing, and no alcohol. After getting wasted on a few root beers, I decided to cut up a rug. As soon as I started doing my patented running man, this one kid looked at me. But it wasn’t just a look. It was a stare. And not just a regular stare. It was an “Oh, I know who you are” stare. I was sure I didn’t know the kid, so I just looked away for most of the time. He was also dancing, and it was apparent that he had memorized the words to the rap song that was blaring out of the speakers. As a few more songs went by, I noticed that he hadn’t lifted his gaze and that he continued to be the master of ceremonies, rapping away to what I thought were pretty inaudible lyrics.

When the stare went on for maybe 5 songs, I was pretty sure of what was going on: he figured I was that minority kid who was “down” (I was wearing a black fitted baseball cap, a sure sign of urban coolness). He wanted recognition for his own coolness—his beanie cap, two-step, and knowledge of hip hop lyrics.

I wanted to make sure that my assumption was correct. I approached him with a poker face, gave him an acknowledging head lift, and said, “What’s up?” He responded, “What’s up, dude?” I said, “You got some pretty good moves. Where are you from?” He responded, “I’m from Florida. Yeah, when I was a kid I had only like three white friends.” I wasn't exactly sure what he wanted me to say to that. Did he want me to compliment him?

Maybe he thought I'd be impressed somehow and would enthusiastically say something like, "Oh, word? So can we be homies?"

Survey analysis: Lots of people who pee in Coke

So the question of the week was, “Before reading the post entitled Me Chinese. Me Tell Joke, had you heard of the Coke joke before?”

The results were: No-23 (61%); Yes-15 (39%)

So I’ve got to admit that the results were a little disappointing. I could have sworn that the Coke joke was more universal than this. I was imagining kids from LA to DC singing “Me Chinese, Me tell joke” in unison. My only consolation is that, at least, 15 of you would have played the joke on me, had you known me at that age (at least, that’s my interpretation).

Here’s something interesting. A good friend of mine who is from NY and is Asian, told me that he had never heard the joke. I was shocked. How could two Asian kids from the same city experience totally different things? Granted, I was in the Bronx and he was in Lower Manhattan/Queens, but still…

Another interesting note: two friends told me that they knew of the joke and would play it on fellow white kids. Now, that seems like a waste…

Minorities and Crime

When I was working in Korea as an intern in 2005, someone broke into my landlord’s apartment, located directly above my apartment. In a land that is almost completely ethnically homogenous (I’d say 99% Korean), it was pretty safe to assume that the perpetrator(s) of the crime was Korean. In a profound way, it was actually pretty refreshing to have race as a null point. When the landlord told me of the incident, there was no name calling or predictions of what the perpetrator looked like—he looked like us.

In America, the topic of crime has a shadow—race. You almost cannot separate the two. I cannot even count the number of times I’ve been in conversations where the person will say that his car was broken into and they will automatically assume “it was probably a black guy.” It has made me wonder if white people ever think that white people commit crimes.

As a criminal defense attorney in Utah County, I hear about a lot of crime. I have a lot of clients who have committed crimes. A friend asked me a few weeks ago, “So, are you defending all the Mexican gangsters?” I quickly responded that only a small percentage of my clients are Mexican. A few days ago when I went to go visit one of my clients in jail who had six criminal charges, each from separate incidents, another friend asked me if the guy was black. Confused that such a question would be asked, I replied, “Of course not! This is Utah County! There are no black people!” The assumptions that fly when you talk about crime are just astounding. You could be in lily white, middle of nowhere USA, (which I am) and people will still think that the criminal is a minority.

Having been born and raised in New York, I can tell you that all the crimes committed against me and my family were perpetrated by folks from all over the color spectrum—it really was a melting pot of crime. Without getting into too much detail: white women assaulted my mother and put her in the hospital, a black person stole my bike… while I was still riding it, Hispanic people shoplifted from my parent’s store more times than I have fingers and toes, and Asian people stole so much money from my parents’ business that they had to restart the business from scratch. So believe me, crime is not a race thing.

Yes, I know if we play the numbers game, I will lose. It’s statistics that will tell you that blacks and Hispanics disproportionately make up a lot of the crime; I can’t dispute that. But no matter what the statistics say, I’d rather not assume anything till I see the guy behind the ski mask.

Race Consciousness

For most children, race is not a conscious thought. You just play with the kids in your neighborhood without much thought as to why some kids had darker or lighter skin. In most cases, due to the racial homogeneity of the majority of neighborhoods in America, you usually played with kids who were the same color as you, so there'd really be no reason for the philosophical "Who am I?" question. For me, the self-realization of my race was one of my earliest thoughts. I was probably only four years old when my brother and I had a discussion of why everyone else in town looked different from us. We had this talk while walking down the street and seeing the dozens of fellow pedestrians with significantly darker skin than ours. My theory was that it was all by chance. I said that when a baby was born (brought by the stork) the color of the newborn was completely random. And by luck of the draw, our whole family came out the exact same color. My brother, Jung, didn't have his own explanation so I took his silence for agreement.

Usually the difference in skin color, alone, doesn't trigger race-consciousness in a four-year-old; there has to be something else. That something else for me and my brothers was the frequent name calling we received when we walked down our street. It was a pretty regular occurrence for complete strangers to see us and immediately say, "Yo, chink!" Well, I guess it wasn't always completely random. More often, it would be in an instance like when we passed by some kids playing baseball and if their ball happened to roll by us, they would yell something like, "Yo chink, get the ball!" Since these kids were always bigger than I, the most I could muster would be a, "Yo, shut up!" That quickly became my knee-jerk retort. After which, I would quickly put my head down and walk away, almost hoping they didn't hear me.

Survey results: lots of people who want racial harmony and to be in a comic book

The survey question of the week was: When it comes to race, which letters describe you best?

The results were: a. KKK-3 b. MLK-12 c. Malcolm X-3 d. X-Men-12

The purpose of this question was to get a sense of what kind of readership was attracted to the blog. Are they the type that strive for peace, love, and racial harmony like Martin Luther King or are they the type to want to kill me like the Ku Klux Klan? Obviously, if there were a bunch of KKK people on here, I may have to rethink my game plan (as in come up with a good exit strategy).

As expected, I got the most votes for Martin Luther King. No doubt, MLK was a great guy, although I have had people argue that he wasn’t. While there might be a few specific things that you don’t agree with regarding MLK, I hope that we can, at least, agree that his objective of reaching racial harmony and doing that through non-violent means was a noble thing to strive for.

X-Men was my joke answer, and I only threw it in there because it had a letter in the name. And as expected, this tied for most votes. I’m guessing that the people who chose this thought it would be funny. Although on second thought, it’s possible that some of those voters were thinking that since the X-Men are comprised of people of diverse backgrounds, that they represented some kind of racial harmony. Probably not, but possible.

Also, as expected, very few people picked Ku Klux Klan and Malcolm X. One of the three people who voted KKK later confessed to me that he was just trying to “spice things up.” As for the lack of votes on Malcolm X, I think this is an indicator of how little most people know about him. I actually hold him in high regard, because among other things, he showed the human capacity to change. He’s usually portrayed as very militant, but before he died he made a 180 degree turn and became a peace-loving person. This is quite remarkable considering that he and his family were targeted by white supremacists since he was still in his mother’s womb. Asian girls are so scandalous

The other day, my friend Brian, told me that the Asian girls on his college campus dressed very “scandalous.” I asked him if he thought that they dressed more scandalously than white folks. He said yes. My other friend, Nate, was also there and he seemed to agree—or more like agree in an objective way by saying that the image of Asian girls is kind of risqué, at least portrayed as such by pseudo-celebrities like Tila Tequila. In my best psychology professor voice, I tried to tell them the concept of confirmation bias, which is the selective memory of things that confirm preconceived notions. I firmly believe that this psychological concept is manifested in us every single day. Confirmation bias can occur where it is unwarranted. For example, let’s take something that is obviously unfounded—like smokers drive red cars. If you believed this, every time a red car passed by with a driver that had a cigarette on his or her lips, you would subconsciously (or very consciously) store that in your memory because it confirmed your belief, no matter how irrational it was.

Not all biases are unfounded; many of them have some truth to them, which is why such biases were formed in the first place. This may be a bad example, but just the other day I saw a rather buff guy with a tight shirt, and it confirmed my bias that buff guys love showing off their muscles. I think this one has some truth to it, but then again, there may be just as many buff guys who don’t like to show people how many hours they spend in the gym.

And then there are biases that are outright wrong. The bias that Asian girls dress more scandalously is probably wrong. You see, 95% of the people on Brian’s campus are white, and so it makes it hard to make stereotypes about a population that is so predominant, whereas it is easier to make stereotypes of the minority. Let’s say that Brian saw a horde of 30 white girls walking to class in bikinis, everyday for a month, my guess is that he wouldn’t ever conclude, “Geez, white girls are so scandalous,” because there would always be 15,000 other white girls who didn’t dress like that. But ironically, if he saw a small group of five Asian girls wearing miniskirts, everyday for a week, he would conclude, as he has, “Geez, Asian girls are so scandalous.”

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe on Brian’s campus, Asian girls are scantily clad above the national average. But all I know is that a week after our conversation, Brian came back to me and said, “Hey, I’ve been looking around campus this week… and there are a lot of modestly dressed Asian girls.”

Me Chinese. Me tell joke.

If you’re Asian, I’m sure that at one point or another, a kid has come up to you with the palms of his hands together in a praying position, asking you to “open the refrigerator.” Unsuspectingly, you pull apart his hands as if to open the door of a refrigerator. The kid then demands, “pull out the Coke!” Suspending belief for a moment, you pull out the imaginary coke and hold it in your hands. The kid then tells you to “open the Coke and drink it.” So you pull the tab and take a chug. That’s when the kid bursts into laughter and starts singing in his best oriental accent, “Me Chinese, me tell joke. Me do pee pee in your Coke.” I had this joke played on me so many times that by the time I was in 6^th grade, I just walked away as soon as I saw the refrigerator.

Kids come up with the cleverest ways to make fun of other kids. The curious thing is how do these kids come up with this stuff? How does every kid in America know the Coke joke? Even a law school friend of mine told me that he recognized that song, and he grew up in Utah, where there were no Asian people to make fun of. And kids seem to be getting more clever.

Just a few years ago I went to a third grade class as a volunteer to teach them about resolving conflict. Now, this may sound weird, but little kids intimidate me. I still have a built-in fear from when I was little because I know that kids hold no reservations when it comes to political incorrectness; they will say what’s on their minds. Well, this time a kid was so clever with the way he made fun of me that I couldn’t get mad. After telling everyone that my name was Jang and introducing myself, one kid in the back of the class raised his hand. I called on him and he asked, “So, can we call you Jackie Jang?”

At least, he asked for permission.

Why I am writing this

I really don’t profess to know a lot about anything. I like to talk politics, law, and religion, but my knowledge of these things is just superficial. However, there is one subject that has been a constant companion of mine, and therefore I have become somewhat of an expert in it; and that subject is race. Not in an anthropological way, but in a sociological way. I have never taken a class on it, but I’ve been an involuntary student of it for the last 28 years. My classroom has been the schoolyard, the street, the church, and wherever else I come into contact with the human race.

While race is becoming less and less of an issue in America since the civil rights movement, it’s still a part of everyone’s lives, especially those who find themselves in the category of “minority.” In some ways, it is a part of my life on a daily basis. I know some of you will think, “But why? Just stop thinking about it so much and it won’t be such an issue anymore.” But it just hasn’t been that simple. Even if I had ignored it with all my might, I wouldn’t have ever been able escape it. I may have been more apathetic, which I have done pretty successfully (well, at least I think so), but because of the way society is, I would have never been able to completely avoid it.

I’m going to try my best to make this blog light-hearted because honestly, most of this stuff is pretty funny, and I really just consider it as part of life and in some ways, no big deal. It’s entertaining stuff. Some of you will relate to me completely, and some, not at all. Some of this stuff will make you mad-either for me or at me. Some of this stuff will make you think that racism is alive and well, while others will think that I am crying over spilled milk. But whatever you think or feel, these are real instances from my life that have made an impact on me in way or another.

In addition to entertainment value, I hope to create a sense of awareness of a social issue that for some people is pretty nonexistent. Racism is often thought of as a thing of the past. I have met countless people who don’t really believe me when I tell them that racism is real and that it is still happening, let alone happening to Asians. In fact, even if they do acknowledge racism, they will almost always think that it only affects African Americans, or that it is a rather rare social malady that is limited to the few sensational stories you hear on the news. While this blog will not contain stories of what sociologists call “classic racism” (lynching, apartheid, and the like), it will be about the everyday, the subtle, even the mundane, and every once in a while the insane things that happen to me because… race happens.
